CURRICULUM LETTER SUMMER TERM
Summer 2 spellings
Our theme this half term is: In Your Element
“In Your Element” is a thematic unit based around the four elements of earth, air, water and fire with a key focus on geography. As well as extending their knowledge of rocks and soils, pupils will learn about natural phenomena such as earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis and tornados. Pupils will also develop their knowledge of rivers and mountains, learning about some of the most important physical features of the UK and the wider world.
We have been really busy this half term with lots of exciting activities to support our learning. We have been to the library in town, where we shared books with our friends and then went to have a look at the Egyptian museum. We have made Roman mosaics. We have 'chilled' with our friends in the sand pit. In science, we have been setting fire to different materials, looking at flammability. As we enter our final half term in Year 5, here are some activities to keep positive!
Y5 Keeping Positive
Our theme for this half term is: You're Not Invited.
“You’re Not Invited” is a thematic unit, based around invaders with a key focus on history. It begins by looking at the concept of invasion, before focusing especially on the Romans, learning about important Roman Figures and their reasons for invading other countries. Pupils will also learn about sources of evidence and their reliability.
HOMEWORK 20 MAY
This week in English, we have been working in groups of 3 to produce a VLOG about volcanoes. First, we had to use the internet to carry out our research, making notes as we went along. Then, we chose our sub-headings and sorted our information into different sections. We had to create diagrams, a slide show, select photographs, decide who was saying what, create models and then work on our presenting skills. We filmed our VLOGs and they are now on you tube for others to view. We hope you enjoy watching them!
We have spent some time thinking about the important work carried out by different charities, locally, nationally and internationally. We looked at the work of Christian Aid and then, with a partner we created an idea for our own charity.
Newsround came into school to film some of the Y5 children talking about Ramadan - enjoy! The children were confident and were a credit to the school. Well done.

Already this half term, we have been busy with lots of new learning. We have celebrated St George's Day, had a sleepover and celebrated Eid with our friends.

WE LOVE READING IN THE LIBRARY - WE BUDDY UP WITH RECEPTION AND SHARE STORIES WITH THEM!
Year 5 were asked to help 'cut' the grass ready for the Summer line markings as the the lawn mower was broken! Look at what a good job they did :)
As well as our learning in the classroom, we have also engaged in lots of different enrichment activities:

Science day - investigation to find the best biscuit for dunking and making circuits
Our creative curriculum is driven by the 4Cs of communication, conflict, conservation and culture which meets the needs of our diverse school community. It is designed to inspire an enthusiasm for learning, engaging with and learning about challenging 21st century issues, dealing with tomorrow’s issues today.
Y5 are Navigators.
We dressed in funky clothes and took part in some activities to help us celebrate RED NOSE DAY! We ended up laughing at each others jokes!
BRITISH VALUES DAY
We spent the day looking at democracy, respect, liberty and tolerance and safety. We completed different activities to help us understand the importance of these values. We also dressed in red, white and blue.
WORLD BOOK DAY
Wow! What a busy, exciting day we have had!
We used the story The Barnabus Project as our stimulus. We read the book and completed different activities. We focussed on five key words - failure, freedom, acceptance, tolerance and community. We designed our own hybrid pet and put it into a bell jar. We created a story board. We designed out own escape route and then made our own community of pets. We hope you enjoy looking at what we got up to!
YEEHAA! We have been learning about Native American Indians and have had a fun day line dancing, making totem poles and some American art.
We have been very busy with lots of exciting learning - we have visited the Apple Store in Manchester for a coding workshop, we have raised money through children in need and the elf run, and have spent a whole day of learning in class without using pens and pencils - lots of talking and listening to our friends to complete a variety of tasks and activities. YEAR 5 DRAGONFLIES KEEPING HALLIWELL CLEAN!
We have been spending time building up our stamina with a series of circuits - enjoy looking at the photographs to see what we have been getting up to.
We spent the day ay Bury Fire Training Centre. We learnt all about keeping safe. We had to dress as a firefighter in less than 90 seconds. Some watches had more success than others! we learnt how to do CPR and put people into the recovery position. We investigated possible causes of fire and had to explore what had happened in a road traffic accident. We also learnt what to do if our clothes caught fire - STOP, DROP, ROLL. Lots of new learning, lots of team work and lots of fun.
We have been busy learning about the space race. We had a spaceman workshop. The spaceman told us all about the space race and then we had great fun making and launching our own rockets. We learnt about thrust, drag and gravity.
Matt Rotherham brought his gold medal into school, which he won at the Tokyo Paralympics. Matt pilots a tandem for Neil Fachie. They won gold in the 1km time trial, breaking the world record in the process.
ASDA SOCIAL ENTERPRISE WORKSHOP
We are working with Christine from Asda to set up a social enterprise. We have spent time looking at how we can reduce food waste as well as helping our community.
