SUMMER FOREST SCHOOL
This term we are doing outdoor learning in Forest School. We love being outdoors and learning in a different way, look at the smiles on our faces.
We have used tools in forest school this week. We were great using the saws.
We loved toasting marshmallows on the open fire, we even got to pop some popcorn too.
We made our sawed wooden disks into necklaces this week, again we were great using the tools.
Do you like the nests we build for the birds?
Spring 2: This half term our theme is 'Happily Ever After'. To begin our learning the children enjoyed participating in a 'Three Little Pigs Day' where they learnt a rap of the story and wrote some wonderful versions of the traditional tale themselves. They made some puppets and used their design and technology skills to make moving pictures and design and make houses for the little pigs. In Computing sessions, year 1 have been improving their knowledge on algorithms and instructed the Big Bad Wolf to travel to different places.
We have also enjoyed participating in Shrove Tuesday, World Book Day, History and Science day activities. To raise money for Comic Relief, we had a 'Funky Friday' where the children brought in money to wear own clothes. We have also enjoyed making Easter cards for our families.
Take a look at the photographs to see how busy we have been and some of the wonderful work that Year 1 have done!
Spring 1: The theme for learning was, 'Never Eat Shredded Wheat'. This was a Geography based topic where we learnt more about the compass directions, North, South, East and West and recapped what we know about the world's seven continents and five oceans. We also learnt about the four countries in the United Kingdom, looked at the flags and some famous landmarks around the UK. We enjoyed visiting the Lego Discovery Centre at the Trafford Centre, where we could spot some UK landmarks (such as the Blackpool Tower, the Liver Building and Manchester Cathedral) and used some design skills to make vehicles, as well as having fun on the rides! Year 1 were very well behaved and all the teachers that went with them were very proud of how they represented St. Matthews. In Science, we learnt more about the weather and seasons, and what appropriate clothing to wear and explored what materials are waterproof. For Art lessons, we focused on improving our drawing and sketching, looking at colours and using pastels to create citrus fruits pictures and in PSHE we expanded our learning on what foods are healthy and where in the world they come from. In P.E. we have started sessions with Comando Joe and Year 1 are doing so well at improving their resilience and independent skills. Year 1 also need to be congratulated on participating and winning a whole school 'dance off' competition! Great work Year 1!
Here are just a few photographs of some of the Christmas activities we did.
Autumn 2: We have done some fantastic learning this half term and are very much enjoying the theme, 'Come fly with me!' (Arctic Circle).
We have been imaginary Pathfinders and made a journey in a North direction to the Arctic Circle. We felt how freezing it was, saw the snow and ice and looked at the Aurora Borealis in the sky. We then returned to class and spotted the Arctic Circle on a globe and in an Atlas. We were very good at remembering what we had learnt in Autumn 1, naming the 7 continents and the 5 oceans. (Check out the Youtube links below the photos - and see if you can sing along!) We have learnt about the Inuit people, how they live and how they build igloos. We even had a go at making our own.
Additionally, we have enjoyed taking part in Children in Need day, had a special visitor from the police, went to the church to celebrate advent and took part in a speaking and listening day!
We also visited Bolton Central Library where they put out lots of books to do with our theme the Arctic. Year 1 behaved fantastically and had a lovely trip out.
Autumn 1: Class 1D loved learning about Pirates during their 'Land Ahoy!' themed work. Please see a collection of some of the things we did in the pictures below.
